ROOTED

Everything we do here at KCM is with the goal of rooting those we serve in Christ. It's our mission: To bring people into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, and help them overcome the crippling effects of sin and guilt.

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
-Colossians 2:6, 7

BELIEFS
They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.

SERVICES

FINANCIALS
KCM was blessed to steward God's provision of $318K in revenues for 2018. This represents a 46 percent increase over 2015, and a 43 percent increase over 2016! YoY, KCM's revenues remained steady at just under $320K.
Picture
Picture
As with previous years, 2018 showed a high percentage of revenue specific to Christian counseling services. This is a strong testimony to the effectiveness of our approach: primarily referral-based, and almost entirely sustained on revenues from services rendered makes KCM almost unparalleled to other non-profits of our kind who typically generate 40-50 percent in revenues from services; with another 25-50 percent from government funding.

While our ministry plan for growth includes an increase in donations, we intend to continue our efforts with monies from private Christian sources. Our intent is to prevent mission creep, an effect that tends to occur with many religious non-profit organizations receiving federal funding; wherein, a gradual shift in objectives moves the organization away from a biblical worldview and more toward a secular one.
Secularization poses the clearest and most obvious threat to the nature of any Christian organization receiving government funds. Facing the threat of litigation and/or the loss of funding if they violate the Fourteenth Amendment, many charities choose to err on the side of submission to what legislators and regulators want. Indeed, some charities have virtually eliminated all religious components from their services in order to remain “compliant” with governmental agencies.
KCM operates on a zero-based budget (ZBB); wherein, all expenditures and allocations must be justified as opposed to budgets increased for the sake of covering increases. ZBB is advantageous because it is more detail-oriented than other forms of budgeting; among other things, it makes it easier to detect and eliminate over-inflated budgets.

The chart to the right shows our 2018 expense percents, a majority of which came from payroll. At KCM, payroll involves payments made to our ministers who function as contractors for the ministry. These payments are based on a set percent paid to the minister
per counseling session.
Picture
In 2018 no salaries were offered; meaning, 100 percent of payroll was directly related to Christian counseling services rendered. This means over 90 percent of our annual budget is spent on direct-benefit services to our counselees. Few non-profits in the U.S. can boast such high direct-benefit percentages. But it is not just our counselees who benefit from KCM's services, our community at large does so as well. For example, researchers tabulated the resulting costs from taxpayer expenditures along with lower tax revenues and estimated $112 billion ($25,000 – $30,000 per divorce) is spent each year at federal (63%), state (30%) and local (7%) levels on programs to counter the ills produced by divorce. It is estimated that 2.42 million divorces occur in the U.S. each year, involving 1.6 million children. With 2.07 children making up the average American household in the U.S., some 3.3 million children enter into the negative affects of their parent’s divorce each year. This means, that, on average taxpayers will spend some $339,000 on each child affected by divorce over the course of that child’s lifetime, or $214K (federal), $101K (state), and $24K (local).

KCM ministers assist married couples in crisis, and once matters are stabilized they work to effect measurable strength and growth so the couple is less likely to continue with dysfunctional dynamics, which translates out to a healthier environment for everyone in the family, and less divorce. Approximately 13 percent (32) of the cases KCM received in 2018 involved marital counseling, and 87 percent (28) of those married couples had children. This equated to approximately 60 children. In 2018 forty-six percent (15) of couples were identified as being devitalized (these couples are most likely to divorce), and another 31 percent (10) of couples identified as being conflicted. While less likely to divorce than devitalized couples, conflicted couples maintain a moderately high rate of divorce.

But after receiving counseling at KCM, 72 percent were found to meet the criteria for harmonious type, and another 5 percent even made it into the vitalized couple typology. These two types are the least likely to divorce. Thus, conservatively, some 45-50 children are unlikely now to have to face the significant challenges of divorce. On the local level (Bakersfield/Kern County) this equates to some $1.08MM saved in tax expenditures over the lifetime of these children (provided they live here their whole life). This is just one of many examples of how KCM is not only benefiting our counselees, but our community as well.
Picture
Since KCM first opened its doors for service our intent has always been to offer affordable rates. Our standard (i.e., non-scale) fee is $120 per session involving Doctorate-level ministers, and $90 per session involving Masters-level ministers. For those with household incomes below $65K we offer sliding scale rates in the $50-$90 range. Almost 70 percent of sessions are conducted below our full rate, and break down as follows:
  • 49 percent low scale rate ($50-$60)
  • 7 percent mid scale rate ($65-$75)
  • 8 percent high scale rate ($80-$90)
In 2018 another 5 percent of sessions involved our groups; which are billed at $300 per two hour session, split evenly among group members (e.g., eight group members pay $37.50 per session, etc.). Added together, these figures demonstrate that close to 80 percent of sessions at KCM are conducted below our full rates.

One final point we would like to make regarding finances: In 2018 our ministers conducted some 10 percent (250) of sessions on a pro bono (no fee) basis. This is not a requirement KCM places on our ministers; rather, it was voluntary on their part, individually decided out of compassion to provide services in unique cases. For example: A single mother in need of counseling for abuse; a veteran in serious need of treatment for PTSD; a couple seeking counsel after the loss of their child. All of whom were seriously affected, but financially could not afford our lowest scale rate ($50-$60). Without the compassion of our ministers, along with the generosity of our donors, and KCM's willingness to partner on such cases, these individuals would still be suffering the crippling effects of their circumstances.

We would like to further point out that this degree of compassion did not just occur in 2018, our ministers have averaged 10-12 percent pro bono sessions since 2007! We have been, and continue to be amazed by our minister's willingness to serve with such compassion, to this degree, consistently for the past decade!

DEMOGRAPHICS
One of our Core Values is unity. God created diversity within the human race, and it is His desire that we Christians unify in the Spirit. Unification is not a destination, its a state-of-being.
It is KCM's intent to excel in all areas (another one of our Core Values), and we will continue to do so in regard to unity. We are encouraged to present the following information on the demographics of those we counsel.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
–Ephesians 4:4-6

According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2010), Bakersfield, CA. lists the following percentages of population by race:
  • 8.2% African-American
  • 6.2% Asian
  • 56.8% Caucasian
  • 45.5% Hispanic or Latino
Clearly, these percentages add-up to more than 100 percent (116.7%). This is due to how the government classifies the races specific to Hispanic and Latino, and acknowledges there is crossover in its figures due to these two groups being so closely defined. Additionally, the government indicates its figures contain estimates of migrant workers within the Hispanic and Latino segments.
The chart above shows the percentages of counselees by race served at KCM. In 2017 we added bilingual services to the Hispanic and Latino communities of Bakersfield, CA. Our continued efforts to reach further into these communities in 2018 has resulted in some 25 percent of KCM counselees identifying as Hispanic or Latino. We are confident this percentage will increase in 2019.
Multiple studies conducted over the years consistently show that women are more likely to obtain professional care to address mental health matters than their male counterparts. One factor believed to be in-play here is that a man must admit he needs help. While receiving counseling a man needs to rely on the counselor, and openly discuss and express emotion. These requirements tend to conflict with traditional "norms" of what it means to be male (i.e., toughness, independence, and emotional control). Furthermore, men may also worry that society might berate them for not being able to "handle it" themselves. We do find evidence of changes within American culture that are slowly opening the door for more men to feel secure with reaching out for professional mental health services.
